Jazz and the movies have had a long and loving relationship. Bessie Smith’s movie “St. Louis Blues” and the Duke Ellington “short” “Black and Tan Fantasy” are early examples of jazz tunes inspiring the narrative of moving images. Many films utilized jazz scores including film adaptations of musical theatre like “West Side Story”, the dark 1958 classic “I Want to Live” and the groundbreaking Brazilian themed romantic tragedy on the Orpheus myth “Black Orpheus”. In addition Jazz musicians’ reinterpretations of movie music allow them to connect with audiences by performing well crafted songs that their audiences know and love. John Bacon’s Jazz Impressions series, which seeks to present concerts by various ensembles unified by a common theme, in collaboration with The Buffalo Jazz Collective, explore the connection between Jazz and great films in two concerts this fall. The ensemble has arranged music from “The Wizard of Oz”, “West Side Story”, “The King and I”, “Black Orpheus” and other classic movies.
